Why do cats scratch carpets at closed doors?

Writer's picture: lee tidmanlee tidman

Hmmm - now this a question that many a cat owner will have asked themselves and have not got to a reason or a way of stopping this destructive behaviour, and many will have simply given up - its either the cat getting in or the carpet getting ruined.

I think that the act of scratching the carpet at a closed door makes perfect sense, your cat is simply doing what they would naturally if they were in the wild. She wants to get in, can't go around the door, can't go over it, so will have to go under it!

So what she is doing is literally digging at the carpet so that there will be hole large enough for her to get under the door. But she really wont be able to mange it as she will run out of carpet , then underlay, then hit a hard floor - but it is instinct that makes her show this behaviour.

Now, this is where we can get a literal win here, as cats are very clever, they remember which side of the door is hinged and which side opens and so in around 90% of cases they will usually go for the side that opens, therefore this is the side of the carpet we shall protect. If she goes for both side then we shall protect both sides.

How does the product work? The Scratchy Cat carpet protector works in two ways - here is how

1) The area of carpet now feels different and certainly not the nice carpet feel that she likes to claw at.

2) The Scratchy Cat protector gives the cat some confusion and therefore the instinct is not active as she is now giving it attention rather than instinct. The protector is also fairly heavy for a cat, and the way it flips up is not easy for her to work out.

Wont she go around it? Now this one is really odd, in the 30 years or so that we have been perfecting this product, she is very unlikely to simply dig around it as she loses interest quickly.
